Brienz

Brienz

Brienz is a lovely Swiss village located on the shore of Lake Brienz.

The first settlements in the area is dated back to the bronze ages. Celtics, Romans and Alamanni lived here for centuries. It is believed that the lake was used as transport route since the first inhabitants moved here; however steamships were introduced only during the 19th century.

When the Brunig Railway was open Brienz grew in importance as a connection point from Interlaken to Lucerne. After less than 30 years the railway was extended to Interlaken and Brienz became only a halfway stop.

At the beginning of the 20th century a lovely lake promenade was built; today it is still possible to enjoy a nice walk surrounded by colorful flowers, beautiful trees while admiring the turquoise lake Brienz’s water. Another way to enjoy this beautiful lake is taking part to a cruise, possibly on the newly restored “Lötschberg”, a 1914 steamer.

Gorgeous is the Brunngasse, the most romantic street in the city that once was called “the most beautiful street in Europe”. Its 18th century houses are all decorated with stunning wood carvings.
